Quetiapine
Quetiapine (Common Indian Brands: Qutipin, Seroquin, Quitipin)
Introduction
Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic medication commonly prescribed to treat mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression (as part of a combination therapy). It works by balancing the activity of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin in the brain, helping to alleviate symptoms such as mood swings, psychosis, and anxiety.
Purpose of the Medication
Used to Treat:
Schizophrenia
Bipolar Disorder (manic and depressive episodes)
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) as adjunct therapy
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (off-label in some cases)
How It Works:
Modulates dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors to stabilize mood, reduce psychotic symptoms, and improve emotional balance.

How to Take It:
Common starting dose:
Schizophrenia: 50–100 mg/day, increased gradually.
Bipolar Disorder (mania): 100–200 mg/day, titrated to 400–800 mg/day.
Depression (adjunct): 50 mg/day, up to 300 mg/day as prescribed.
Maximum dose: 800 mg/day (as advised by your doctor).
Can be taken with or without food, usually once daily at bedtime or as divided doses.
Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or chew.

Precautions

Painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin (increased bleeding risk).
Medications that prolong the QT interval (e.g., certain antibiotics or heart medications).
Herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort.
Always inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking, including traditional and alternative therapies.

It may take 1–2 weeks for noticeable symptom relief and several weeks for full therapeutic effects.
Do not stop the medication abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this may cause withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety or insomnia.
